Welcome to MrExcel.com, a website that offers support and a wide variety of services to users of Microsoft Excel software, including the following.
- MrExcel.com Message Board: The fastest way to get an answer to your Excel problem is to post it to the new
Mr. Excel Message Board. The Message Board is the most popular section of Mr. Excel.
- I have over 600 video tutorials online, for free. You don't have to spend an entire day at computer class. Learn something in 2-4 minutes: Excel Videos.
- MrExcel.com Consulting: For problems that are more complex, or if you need a complete application,
hire Mr. Excel Consulting to do Excel or Office consulting by e-mail.
MrExcel and a team of consultants work full time developing applications that work with Excel, Access and all of the Office Applications. We develop applications of various sizes for clients around the world, from Western Australia to Argentina to Palo Alto, California to London, England.
We offer expertise in VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), Lotus to Excel macro conversion,
emergency data analysis in Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and custom
map design in MapPoint or MapInfo, and more.
- There are over 150,000 pages at MrExcel.com. Use Google to search our site:

- If you are upgrading to Excel 2007, check out Bill Jelen's books on Excel 2007:
- Power Excel Seminars
My favorite part of being MrExcel is traveling to entertain and inform people with my Power Excel Seminars. There are now three versions of this seminar available on DVD-ROM:
- MrExcel's best selling book for Excel 97-2003 solves 277 Excel mysteries. All questions are posed by real Excel users at my Excel Power Seminars. There are three great ways to get this book.
- Buy the print version of the book.
- Buy the E-Book version. My only regret is that the book is a heavy book. We are finding that airmail shipping to England and Australia is costing as much as the book (not to mention the customs and GST fees added by your country at the border). Usually, publishers wait a few months to offer an E-Book, but in order to make it easy to get the book out internationally, you can buy the e-Book for immediate download. Even US customers in a hurry might appreciate this option.
- Try before you buy! Over 6 million chapters of the book have been given away. Sign up at this page to get a free chapter a week, every week.

- COOL: Download and watch a daily 2-minute podcast about Excel right on your PC. This article walks you through setting it up.

DAILY 2-MINUTE VIDEO PODCAST TO YOUR PC
It’s hard to believe, but in the 2.5 years since the podcast started, we’ve produced over 630 episodes with 21+ hours of Excel content. I don’t think anyone at iTunes considered a daily podcast when they set the limit to 50 episodes per podcast. Since it is becoming increasingly difficult to find all of the episodes, I’ve burned them all on a single DVD-ROM:

- In his book, Beautiful Evidence, Edward Tufte introduced the concept of SparkLines. A SparkLine compresses intense amounts of data into a word-sized graphic like the ones shown below. SparkMaker allows you to add SparkLines to Excel. The free version can produce simple sparklines like the left example below. The Basic edition adds the SparkBars and the Pro Edition adds Excel functions to dynamically generate multi-color SparkLines. In the top right example, the monthly stock price for Google for 28 months. The red bar is the low, the blue bar is the high. Below that, the monthly stock price for Microsoft. Rather than show the current value of something on a dashboard, add a SparkBar to show the history of that number.
- Charley Kyd is the king of Excel dashboards. He has put together an EXCEL-lent kit showing how to make cool dashboards using nothing more than Excel. You get his e-book plus 18 sample files. I love this kit! Anyone responsible for reporting data to managers should have a copy of the Dashboard kit

Tip of the Week
Using Filter to Find Records in Excel 2007

Leo Laporte, Bill Jelen, and Kate Abraham on the set of The Lab on TechTV Canada.
The tip in this show is from Learn Excel 97 through 2007 From Mr Excel. As mentioned on the show, you can download a free preview of the entire book from this page.
Excel 2007 provides dramatic improvements to the Filter function in Excel. You can quickly filter a list to find a specific customer, records from a certain month, or records highlighted in a certain color.
Try these steps to add an ad-hoc total to your data set:
- Turn on the filter feature as described above.
- Filter the list to one customer: Open the Customer dropdown. Click Select All to unselect all customers. Click on customer to select that customer.
- Select cells directly below the data in the columns for any numeric fields.
- On the Formulas tab of the ribbon, select the AutoSum icon (it is a Greek letter E, or Sigma)
The totals that appear will only total the visible records. So, in this image, one customer had $406K of revenue:
Choose a different customer from the dropdown in D1 and the total will reflect that customer:
New in Excel 2007
- The dropdown for a date column automatically offers a hierarchical view of the dates. Click the plus sign
next to 2007 to see all of the months in 2007. Click the plus sign next to any month to see all of the days in that month.
Or, use the new Date Filters to filter to last week, this month, next quarter, and so on.
- Filter a text field to only records that contain a certain word
- Filter a numeric column to only records above average:
- Filter by color:
To clear all filters, use the Clear icon on the Data tab of the ribbon.
Check back after March 19, 2008 and you can view my segment here.
I really hope to give away 5 million copies of the book, so please send your co-workers and friends to
leobook.html.
