inserting subtotals

I tend to use a lot of subtotals and find it cumbersome to use the fx key or type in "=subtotal(9,". Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can create VBA script to insert =subtotal(9, [without making it a label] then have the script return control to the Excel sheet and allow me to select the range I want to subtotal?
