Excel Copying from a normal cell to a merged cell

I created a form in excel that originally was a table from a Word document. It took a lot of hiding of cells and a lot of merging of cells due to the different width columns and different height of rows.

Well anyways, I try to copy normal cells and paste them onto this document, but it doesn't work. It says "Cannot change merged cell". Is there anyway this merged cell can be formatted to act as a normal cell.

Here's a work-around i use routinely for that problem if it's across columns (no help for down row merges). Highlight the part of the row you want to merge. Then, instead of merging, go Edit-->Format-->Cells, click on the "alignment" tab, and under "Horizontal" select "center across selection". So that area will look like it has been merged, but Excel will treat it as if they are not and all of the cells can be manipulated normally.
