error "can't shift objects off sheet"

This is driving me mad. Sometimes when I try to hide some columns I get a message "can't shift objects off sheet". Try as I may, I can't find any objects on the sheet. I have tried Edit - Go To - Special - Objects and Excel tells me that there aren't any objects on the sheet. Any clues out there?
