EXCEL 97 File Save/Open Error

Posted by Ben Wood on June 11, 2001 7:02 AM
I have started getting the following error either as I save a file after making changes or when I am trying to open a file saved after a certain time, but it doesn't happen on files I have saved prior to a certain point in time.

I can open files saved prior to that time, but now when I save after changes I get the message again.

Clicking "OK" kicks me out of Excel completely and the file is then inaccessible.

"Excel has casued an error in EXCEL.EXE.
Excel willnow close.

If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer."

Any ideas on why this is happening?

Registry SNAFU? Uninstall and reinstall Office

Posted by Eric on June 11, 2001 7:15 AM
First off, that's a horrible problem, and it sounds like a registry screw up to me. Usually you see something like that happen and you reboot and it goes away, that means the registry's OK. In your case it sounds as if the registry is actually loading the problem in, or another recently added program is interfering with the excel registry.
But "when you hear hoofbeats think horses not zebras" as they say in the medical profession. That is try to solve as if you have the most likely problem before attacking the exotic one, so I'd try an uninstall reinstall before I did anything else.
Uninstall through the control panel "add remove programs" applet, REBOOT, and then reinstall, and then REBOOT again to see if that fixes it.
