Is it possible to have have conditional formatting work in a way that it fromats more than one cell in a row based on the value of one cell in the row, to the formating set instead of just one cell.

Yep. When you reference the cell you're basing the formatting off of, make sure you reference it absolutely (with dollar signs, i.e. =$A$2).
Then you can use the format painter to copy and paste the conditional formatting to as many cells as you want, and they will all act the same way.
