COUNTIF

Is it possible to specify a range for countif which spans over many worksheets? When I try to do it, Excel gives me the error message - #VALUE!.
What am I doing wrong?
Please help!

One way is like this :-
=COUNTIF(Sheet1!A1:A5,1)+COUNTIF(Sheet2!A1:A5,1)
