Excel list validations - can i put the list anywhere else besides the spreadsheet?

Hi all, my problem is that i have created a spreadsheet that employs validations via drop down lists. The data you can pick from is pointed to in the spreadsheet through the validation function (for example =$A$1:$A$2 Where A1 would be yes, A2 would be no. Now my problem is that this spreadsheet gets bulkloaded to a data storage program (FileNet) that will not accept the Yes (A1) or the NO (A2) being on the spreadsheet. Can the data that goes in validations (in terms of lists) be resident anywhere that they are not front and centre in the spreadsheet?

if the only validations you are using are yes and no, they don't have to be anywhere on the spreadsheet. when you are setting up your validation, set 'Allow' to 'List', and in 'Source', instead of specifying a range, just type in your list as "Yes,No" (without the quotes).

Yes that did work initially but when i saved the spreadsheet i have to save it in workbook 5.0 format to jive with the FileNet system that i have to bulkload to. Now when i try to even click the cell i put that type of validation into the whole program crashes .. eeeps.
