Problem with Dates

Is there any way to convert a date to a string ??

I need to extract the month and year as a string from a date.

I need a genuine string not just a cell formatted to display a string.

Any help gratefully accepted.

=TEXT(A1,"yyyymmdd") will create a text string
out of the date value in cell A1 based on the
format model shown.
