Hours to currency

I am trying to calculate hours to $$. My formulas are not recognizing others as complete numbers so I am getting a solution such as 8.40 hours * $2.00 per hour = .72. WHY????!!!!???? I am looking for a simple $16.80.

Is it possible that your 8.4 hours was entered
as 8:40 which has an internal value of 0.36111?
0.36111*2 = 0.72222.

My hour colum is a formula calculating 6:30 am - 4:30 pm. What format should be used to get a true 8.40 hours?

=("4:30 P"-"6:30 A")*24 is 10 hours, not 8.4!

Sorry that was just a number I pulled out of nowhere. It is actually 6:30-3:10 that I am working with

Okay, =("3:10 P"-"6:30 A")*24 is 8.6667 hours.
The point is that Excel stores times as a
fractional part of a day. So in order to
convert to hours you need to multiply the
time difference by 24. Please note that
cell references can be used in place of the
text representation of time values in my
formula above. Sorry that was just a number I pulled out of nowhere. It is actually 6:30-3:10 that I am working with
