Absolute Cell References

I mull through all of the messages on this site to gain information and experience for Excel. I was interested to see that the F4 key should change a cell reference within a formula to an absolute address. I wonder if I am interpreting this correctly because I immediately rushed to a spreadsheet but it did not work. I thought I had discovered a quick way to make a reference absoluted before I inserted a Row or column, or before I move the formula. Am I missinterpreting this in some way. Just trying to pick up on every little snippit. Thanks muchly.

Activate an empty cell in B. Go to the Formula Bar, type e.g., =SUM(A:A first, now hit F4 then type ), the closing paren.

F4 doesn't just make absolute references... Each
time F4 is depressed it cycles the reference
through relative, mixed, and absolute references.
=A1, =$A$1, =A$1, =$A1...

I want to thank both Mark W and Aladin Akyurek for their reply. I was selecting a cell which contained a formula and pressing F4. I now see that it could cause some awful problems if it were aloowed. You lads made it simple and plausible, Thanks again Mike.
