Group Function in Pivot Table

In a pivot table of data with dates in the first column, for a range I select the Date header, and go to GROUP. Sometimes this gives me a menu that allows me to group by weeks or month (which is what I want), and sometimes I get a new column to the left of date (which is not what I want).
I can't figure out what I'm doing different. The best I can do is delete the sheet, save the file and start over. HELP is no help. What's the deal?

You won't be able to group a date field if all of
it's values are dates. Make sure that the 'Date'
column doesn't include text values or blanks.
Check your list range to make sure that it doesn't
include blank rows.
