preventing data duplication

WE use Excell to track invoices at work. I've been looking for a way to have Excell somehow alert us to duplicate data entries.
Any suggestions??

There's probably a beter way, but I have a large spreasheet with G/L account numbers in it. To ensure i don't duplicate any, I have another column next to the G/L account number with the formula =COUNTIF(Range,A1), where A1 is the cell to the left, and Range is the named range for all the G/L numbers. If the result is more than 2, there is a duplication.
