Can a Vlookup output be automatically alphabetized?

Posted by GLITZ on December 18, 2000 5:16 AM

I have a look up that produces a list of employees by name. The lookup goes down a column (organized by employee number) to find the names.

The output of the lookup is then produce in the order it looked them up.....by number

Any Ideas?
(I'd like to avoid a macro)

Thanks

I've never seen any worksheet formulas that can sort data alphabetically - perhaps it can't be done?
Even John Walkenbach in his book "Excel 2000 Formulas" states that he was not able to produce a formula to do it.
Perhaps you should resort to recording a macro to sort the results of your lookup.

I have an Excel file that applies the sorting technique described in the above mentioned post to your case. If you want to have a look at it, I can send you a copy.
