Creating new cell text from existing text

I have a very long column containing 3 letter airport codes for the world. I need to sort these based on groups. So what I need to do is when the text in A1 is ABQ then in B1 I want to put WEST, then if A2 is BOS, I want EAST in B2. Appreciate any help that you can provide.

How are you determining which area goes with what airport code? Do you already have a list with all the codes for WEST, EAST etc in another workbook? IF this is the case, you could use Excel's LOOKUP functions. I would need more info to give you a more complete answer.

I don't have a list in a workbook, yet. If that is the simplest way, I can do that. Obviously, I have to enter all of the info at some point in any case. Which isn't a major problem, since this will be reused endlessly once I get it set up.
