Adding Automatic Date to Spreadsheet

I need to know how to have my spreadsheet automatically post the current date. Please help-its driving me crazy!

add the following formula to the cell you want the date to appear in.
=today()

Addition question to this....how do it get it to retain the date. Say I put that formula in a cell and when I go back to that sheet tomorrow it changes it to the current date. How do I get it to hold the date that was put there to begin with?

Use control colon (Ctrl-:) instead of using a formula.

jim...is this the answer to your last question about retaining the date.....(ctrl-:)...? how did it work......
