Deleting a Link Between Workbooks
Posted by Mark on January 24, 2002 12:40 PM
How do I delete a link between two different workbooks. When I open the workbook, I get the message "The workbook you opened contains automatic links to information in another workbook..." I want to stop getting this message and I want to get rid of the link.

open the workbook which causes the 'do you want to update links' message to display(say it's called book1.xls), go to the edit menu, select links and hit the 'change source' button. this will display a 'file open' kind of dialog box from which you can find the workbook book1.xls. click on the file and hit ok and that should break the link. you'll need to make sure you don't lose any data from the other workbook before you do this though.
microsoft also has a patch for this but i don't have time to find it right now - it's on their knowledge base though.

that microsoft fix is at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q188449 [nt]
