Can an Excel grid be linked to Word in a "landscape" format?

Check,

Yes. Copy your spreadsheet from Excel, in Word click on Edit > Paste Special then indicate Paste Link and select Excel Object.

"Landscape" is a Print property. Excel (or Word for that matter) doesn't care what the page orientation is. Of course, if the object doesn't fit you'd have to dink around with it, but that's not necessarily because of the application.
