Pivot Table Grouping

Posted by Roberto on September 18, 2001 6:03 AM

I am trying to group data that I have summarized in a pivot table and the grouping function doesn't seem to be working. I keep on getting a message box saying that it can't group that selection. However, it does work on a different pivot table which is from the same source. The data is from an external Access database, and it's in decimal format.

Does anybody have any tips that I should be looking out for...I can't seem to figure this out...it works and it doesn't.

Please advise!

What's the composition of your PivotTable?
Exactly, what are you selecting?

In the table that works, I have...
Left Clm: Week Numbers
Right Clm: Tonneage

I select the left column always!

In the table that doesn't work, I have...
Left Clm: Width Data (with one decimal)
Right Clm: Tonneage (with decimals)

I also selec the left column.

I don't understand why it works in one column and not the other. I setup a sample database with decimals (on the excel sheet) and built a pivot table around that, and it seemed to work.

Still puzzled!

Roberto, the fact that a number has a decimal or
not should have no bearing on grouping. There's
something else about this PivotTable preventing
you from Grouping. As of yet, you haven't provided
enough clues. Did you try rebuilding the PivotTable
from scratch and Grouping with fewer established
PivotTable fields?

Hi Mark, Thanks for replying.

I agree about the decimals, I have done this so many times with success, but this isn't working.

The data that I am summarizing is in an Access table. I built the p-table from an external data source, using an ACCESS* datasource. (I've also used ACCESS(Not Shareable) as a source). The p-table is very simple...width vs. tonneage. Grouping works if the data is in the excel spreadsheet, but I can't get it to work from an external data source.

Any suggestions!
Anything else that you need that might help you understand?

I don't believe that your problem is with your
data source either. It's something about the
construction of your PivotTable. Is there
any other aspects of it's construction that
you haven't mentioned? Hi Mark, Thanks for replying. I agree about the decimals, I have done this so many times with success, but this isn't working. Mark...I figured it out...

It was a data integrity issue. I looked at the data before, but I must have missed the records that didn't have any entries!

This was the root of all my troubles!

I don't understand! That shouldn't have
prevented you from Grouping. Did you have
a "(blank)" item listed beneath your
PivotTable field? Mark...I figured it out...

Yes!

It didn't work with it there, so what I did was not show that in the table (I didn't delete the records from the database), and it still didn't work.
It only worked once I deleted the blank records from the database.

Don't know why!
