Can anyone help?
I double click on an Excel File icon and Excel program opens but then I get a gray blank screen.
But if I open first the program and then use Open File and then select the same file, it opens okay.
Strange. Is it a virus?
All my other programs work fine and in fact Excel was okay just 10 minutes ago.

Excel Facts

Using Function Arguments with nested formulas
If writing INDEX in Func. Arguments, type MATCH(. Use the mouse to click inside MATCH in the formula bar. Dialog switches to MATCH.
Excel File icon

Do you mean a desktop shortcut to a particular file? If so, right click, view the properties and verify that the path is the valid path to the file.

I have checked the properties and the path is correct.
C:\Documents and Settings\Walter Sun\Desktop
for items placed on the Desktop.
Attributes: has Archive checked and when I uncheck it and then try again, still the same.

No, I believe that C:\Documents and Settings\Walter Sun\Desktop is the Location of the icon. I am talking about the Target (found on the Shortcut tab).

Make sure that file path and name in the Target is correct (that the file and path is where your file can be found -- if it has been moved or if the name has changed, it may not worl any longer).

Jmiskey,
What "shortcut tab"?
The file itself is sitting on the desktop and when I 2x click this icon, which is the file, i get a blank gray Excel screen with "ready" on the lower left.
I then must go to File, Open, etc and then locate the file on the desktop and then double click or select and then click open.
Very strange.  :devilish: :x

I have seen this before and experienced it again yesterday.

A user opened an excel file, direct, not from a shortcut, and only the excel application window opened, no document window.

Goto the window menu and it appears to be there . . . . marked with a check.

If you then open a new book, this appears fine. Use the window menu to switch to the original and just the grey applicaton window again (with the new book minimised)

The only way I could get to see the original was to maximise the new wookbook, then use ctrl + tab to switch between open docs. This worked.

The window menu still didn't work !!!
Very strange.

I may have something that might help. I had similar problems and had one of my IT ppl show me a trick.

Open Excel Options, go to the General tab, make sure "Ignore other applications" is UNCHECKED. Click ok, then go and try to double click on a file.

This worked for me and I hope it solves your problem as well.

Double Clicking an excel workbook opens a blank excel applic

Had the same bug, just fixed it, the setting:

"Tools-->Options-->General --> Ignore Other Applications ---> UNCHECK "

was indeed the problem. I guess checking the option disables the DDE, which is needed to open the SPECIFIC document. With the DDE disabled,
EXPLORER cannot communicate with Ecxel.

(I THINK)

Note that in order to change the options, the EXCEL window MUST contain
an open document, othewrwise the menu is grayed out. So open EXCEL first,
load a document using FILE --> OPEN, and then fix the bug

DUMB, DUMB, DUMB, DUMB, DUMB "bill gates".

If Microsoft ever got a monopoly on the manufacture of calculators,
I would be buying stocks in pebbles and beads !!!!
