(1) If you use Selection.End(xlDown).Select you are suppose to get the last entry in a row/column; however, this selection does not work in my program/macro when the specified sheet only has entrries in the first row.(works for other worksheets) Instead it goes to last empty cell. Can you help?

Excel Facts

Which Excel functions can ignore hidden rows?
The SUBTOTAL and AGGREGATE functions ignore hidden rows. AGGREGATE can also exclude error cells and more.
How about:

Cells(65536,1).End(xlUp).Select

(change 1 to the column you wish to select the last entry in - A=1,B=2, etc.).
