i have a task list in Excel. i type my tasks in cells with word wrap and autofit settings. sometimes however, Excel add "space" for extra line of text in a cell (ie third line when text in a cell fits on just 2 lines). autofitting doesn't solve is, there's no Alt-Enter - the only solution is just manually decrease row height.

could someone please tell me if this is a problem in Excel (i use 2003) and how to work around it. THANK YOU!

Have you checked to make certain that there's no Alt-Enters (CHAR(10)) in there?

They can be sneaky little bees.

I've found the ASAP Utilities add-in useful in this situation: http://www.asap-utilities.com/

You can automatically remove these and any other extra characters that may be screwing up the data with this.

thanks for responce. i've checked. there are no alt+enters.

this "extra line" usually occurs when one of the previous lines is "long" ie. taking almost all width of the cell.

Hello all. This looks like a very useful forum.

I'm having this problem right now actually. The only way to fix the misfit rows seems to be manually but that's a bit of a pain in the **** with 6000 rows to check over. Anybody figured it out yet or am I just dreaming?

Thanks!

I've had the same problem for years now (Excel 2000). I imagine that the wrap text function in a spreadsheet program is just not as sophisticated as the same function in a word processor such as Word or WordPerfect.

I had this same problem last week. I think the bottom line is what Barry said.

autofitting doesn't solve [it].

I found that if I adjusted my column width, even if I only moved it one pixiel, and then readjusted my row height, I could make some of the blank lines go away. For some reason, it seemed to me that the AutoFit was more responsive if I gave it a reason to check itself.

BCExceler, are you selecting all the rows (Ctrl+A) and Format menu > Rows > AutoFit? With this method you can adjust 6,000 rows as easily as you can do 6 rows.

I found that if I adjusted my column width,

Yes, I've done that. My problem is that I have maybe 30 or 40 rows of wrapped text, and adjusting the column for one can screw up another.

I do find that auto height works, though, even if some of the cells have an extra blank line on top. You guys aren't wrapping in merged cells, are you? That will mess up auto heiight.

I didn't say this in my earlier post, but if I increase the column width under these circumstances, I'll decrease again. Then do the AutoFit. Like I said, just give it a reason...

Yup I selected all the rows properly. And nope, I'm not wrapping in merged cells.

You're right about autofit working after changing the column width but it's still not perfect becasue it alters previously OK rows.

Oh well...I give up. It's just a weird quirk I guess... or conspiracy.

Thanks for the help.
