Excel AutoFilter does not work

I received a spreadsheet which has about 700 rows. When I turn on the autofilter on the top row it does not give me the list of values; actually it just gives me the first value in the row beneath the header row where the autofilter is set.

There are no blank rows. Why does this filter not work, any ideas. Thanks

There are no hidden rows.

Excel Facts

Copy a format multiple times
Select a formatted range. Double-click the Format Painter (left side of Home tab). You can paste formatting multiple times. Esc to stop
Was the entire range of data selected before turning on the autofilter?
Are there any other fields filtered? Turn off autofilter, select your range, then turn autofilter back on. Does that make a difference?

No change; range selected, filter off and filter on...
I also copied the enture sheet to a new workbook and no difference.

What kind of data do you have in your autofilter range? Formulae? Text?

Create a new range of data on a separate sheet and see if autofilter works on that data. (Not a copy of your problem data).

Auto filter worked fine on another sheet with different data; then I copied the problem data it would not work.....

So I copied the data without headers and it worked fine; and then I seperately copied in the header row and it now works...

I would love to know why but I have never seen it before and don't expect to see it again.

Thanks

Glad you were able to sort it out.
Must have been something in the header row, but what???

Thanks for sharing.

I had the same problem -- and discovered the hard way that autofilter assumes a header row exists and will include that row in the filtered results, regardless of your filter selections.

My solution: insert an empty row for the filter operation, and then remove it after you have worked with the filtered data.
