enable a macro

i have downloaded a workbook from the web with macros when i want to run the macro it tells me the macros are disabled can any one tell me please how to enable a macro

Hi ebraun:

What version of Excel are you using? On later versions of Excel, because of Security concerns, the macros must be either certified to be from a trusted source, or the user has to take the responsibility of setting the security level to low to permit the macros to run.

So, here is what you might want to try:

1. Open Excel -- then go to TOOLS|MACRO|SECURITY ... set it to low
2. Exit Excel
3. Open Excel again, open your file -- and see if the macros will run now

Please post back if it works for you -- otherwise explain a little further and let us take it from there. And as Stevebausch has suggested, you should also look into the Help files for relevant information.

For searchers...

In Excel 97, you have two options: Macro Virus Protection is either OFF or ON. The setting is under Tools-Options, General tab.

In Excel 2000, you have three options:
Low: You are not asked and macros are ENABLED always.
Medium: You are asked whether to enable macros or not. (recommended if you're unsure which option to pick)
High: You are not asked, and macros are DISABLED always.
The settings are under Tools-Macro-Security.

In Excel XP:
The options are the same as Excel 2000. Likewise, you can find the settings under Tools-Macro-Security. You can ALSO find the settings under Tools-Options, Security tab, Macro security button.

Thanks for taking the initiative to bring it up for all recent versions of Excel.

However, for Excel 97, selecting MACRO_VIRUS_PROTECTION to be ON does just as it says, check for among other things, whether a macro in the workbook being opened may contain a virus, but does not categorically prevent every macro from being permitted to run.

Checks workbooks for macros that might contain macro viruses. Turns on a built-in warning message that appears whenever you open a workbook that might contain macro viruses (that is, the workbook contains macros or customized toolbars, menus, or shortcuts).
