How do I count Y (yes) and N (no) in a column

I have a spread sheet that someone mailed to me. It is HUGE! I need to count how many "Y" in a column and how many "N" in the same column.

Help please!

Look up the COUNTIF function

=COUNTIF(A:A,"y")

This example will count all the "y" in column A.
