Hi all,

I have Excel 2003. I'm getting this message when I run a macro that reads values from n (variable number of files) number of files. If I choose Continue, the macro runs ok but at the end, I check the Edit-Links window and always the last file comes up with "unknown" status; I check the status and it goes to OK.

Now, the real problem, I believe, is seen when I run the macro and choose Edit Links instead of Continue. At this point I see that a file shows up in the list, which does not exist anymore (or was renamed) but there is nothing actually linking to it in my wb. I've read these two threads below and done what they suggest and can't find anything. However, tried looking for the #REF defined names, but I want to make sure the procedure is right: Insert-Name-Define and in the box for Refers to: #REF clik Enter and the window closes without any message; does that mean there are no #REF's?

Any help would be appreciated.

Excel Facts

Easy bullets in Excel
If you have a numeric keypad, press Alt+7 on numeric keypad to type a bullet in Excel.
When you are in the names dialog box, the bad names show up like this (excel 2003):

<img src="http://i617.photobucket.com/albums/tt259/alex44141/MrExcel/20090214_Names.jpg" border="0" alt="names dialog box">

You need to actually delete the name altogether when the name is bad...in this case hit the delete key after selecting the name in the window. I found I had maybe one or two workbooks where even after this there was still a problem...though I haven't seen that message for a while now.

Does that help? Alex

Sometimes there are links that are due to bad references in the vbe too...not sure...If you go to Tools | References in the VBE is anything "MISSING"?

I had this happen to me about two years ago too...never could find the source of the problem...

It may help if you have your code open the file before getting to the statements that refer to the file. Excel seems to handle links faster and better when the external workbooks are already open.

Another idea might be to "Break Link" on that file...does that help? Probably you've tried that already... :(

Hi Alexander,

thanks for the reply. There is nothing Missing and about the second option, when I see the file under the Edit-Links window, the button to break the link is grayed out, so I can't do that either.

I think I will have to recreate teh sheet to solve the problem.... thanks for the help anyway.
