Excel Freeze really annoying

If I copy a formula in workbook A with a link referring to workbook B which is not open at the time and paste it in another cell in Workbook A, my Excel freezes up for good. Outside of the obvious (open up the Workbook B before pasting the formula) is there any way I can abort or avoid this freeze from occuring?

Excel Facts

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).
You might try turning calculation to manual, but it's trying to recalc and can't 'cause it can't link...

Hi Gary,

I have a similar problem, how do I:

"freeze dynamic link long enough to cut & paste to non-dynamic cell"

Thanks
