Hi. If I have a six digit number such as 012345, how do I format the Excel cell so it shows up as 012345 rather than 12345 as it recorrects itself.

Thank you,

Why can't spreadsheets drive cars? They crash too often!
Select the cells, Format > Cells, on the Number tab click on Custom then enter the format

000000

and click OK.

Okay, I tried that and it isn't working. I followed the following steps:

  1. Right click on column
  2. Format cells
  3. Go to Number tab
  4. Click on category Custom.
  5. Click on the last type 00000.
  6. Press okay.
Am I missing a step?

Thanks,

Could there be a flaw in Excel? I am definitely using Excel 2007 and I have double checked and the custom is only for five zeros 00000, not six.

See if this helps:

Do you still want the number to remain a number (on which you can do a calculation?) If it is, you have to use the custom formatting as per the previous posts.

If you don't, a quick cheat is to just start with an apostrophe. '

While selecting Custom shows a lot of formats in the list box, you can type your own in the box that says Type:

Replace whatever is in that box with 000000
