1. ## Using the results

If I perform a function or formula on a column of text entries, and place the results in a 2nd column, and each entry in the 2nd column is a text entry, and I try to alphabetize the 2nd column of text entries, it won't alphabatize by the results of each cell. How can I alphabatize by the result?

2. ## Re: Using the results

You should be able to sort the second column (assuming that's what you mean by alphabetize). Where is the function entered and what function is it?

3. ## Re: Using the results

The function was to get the last 2 letters of a word by doing
=RIGHT(A1,2) . I got the last 2 letters OK but if I do a sort or az it didn't sort by the result but appears to sort by the cell from which the result was obtained... e.g. A1,A2,etc.

4. ## Re: Using the results

Before you sort click on a cell in column 2

5. ## Re: Using the results

I did -still won't sort;

If you click on a cell-say the cell in B1 has the letters "ly"; but what you see above in the bar is not "ly" but =RIGHT(A1,2) ;cell in B2 has say "an" and above you see =Right(A2,2);the sorting in column B seems to be according to A1,A2 and not the entries, so after the alphabetical ascending sort you "see" the cell with "ly" still above the cell with "an" .

Hope above is clear and in any event appreciate the help.

6. ## Re: Using the results

Try using the Data menu...choose Data...Sort....check the correct option button for whether your data has a header row. First click in a cell in column 2, though.

7. ## Re: Using the results

Ok got it to work by replacing formula with its calculated value. Then the sort worked normally.

Thanks again

8. ## Re: Using the results

It should have worked without having to change the formula, using the Data Sort menu. Sometimes the toolbar one seems to not work for me as well. Not sure how it handles the header row check. Glad you worked it out.
