conditional formatting

hi guys..

i am selecting a cell containing text in conditional formatting...if one cells containing text get selected..other cells should get selected.

its going differently in my case.


please check the screenshot...if i select the cell AVAILABLE and below if FINISHED is inserted..all the cells from A3 TO E3 should get highlighted.

I'm not sure this is what you meant, but if you want to lets say fill with blue the entire rows that correspond to "FINISHED" in column E, here is what you should do:


  • Select the table you want to apply the conditional formatting
  • Go to "Conditional Formating"
  • Click in "New Rule"
  • Select "Use a formula to determine which cells to format"
  • And in your case the formula should be E2:$E$5="Finished"
  • Then you decide how you want the format to be and apply.

This should provide you with all the rows formated in a different way if in column E there is "Finished" written.

Thanks for sharing....yes you exactly got what i want..if i type text "FINISHED" in the Cell E3 all the row from A3 TO E3 Should get highlighted...but your method doesnt work in this case

I think the formula should be: =$E2="Finished"

Meaning that the column reference is absolute and the row number not. Apply this to the full table range A3:E6 and it should work I think.
