I have field 1 being [product code], field 2 being [transaction date], field 3 being [quantity sold/purchase]. I want to make a running total in field 4 to see the balance of each of the product on each of the transaction date. I tried RT:Dsum("[Quantity sold/purchase]", "Query 1") but it doesn't work. Please help and thanks!

Excel Facts

Enter current date or time
Ctrl+: enters current time. Ctrl+; enters current date. Use Ctrl+: Ctrl+; Enter for current date & time.
I'm not an access user per se, but from previous knowledge i'm not sure the flat nature of a database is usable in the sense I have read your requirement

you would be expected to create a query that does the addition,

basically
SELECT
FROM
WHERE
GROUP BY

in effect you would create your sum from the rows that fulfil the criteria (date range you want), and then display only the totals for each date
