When I open an excel worksheet, a gray screen is displayed (like excel is opened but no file is opened). The file is there, I can generate a print preview. The sheet isn't hidden or protected. What can be wrong?

Is the workbook hidden? Try Window > Unhide.

No it isn't hidden. Also when pressing alt-tab you can see that the file is open, but it just is'n't displayed.

OK, are all 256 columns hidden, or all 65536 rows hidden? Do you see any column headings or row headings?

Or, do you have a single gray box in the upper left corner of the gray screen?

You might try clicking on View- Normal as you may be looking at it in Page Break view, with a small print area.

Nothing is visible. It's like Excel is opened but no file is opened. When I open the file nothing changes in this screen, though the file is opened.
I can see no column or row headings, and no gray box is displayed.

I threw away my excel.xlb and restarted Excel. Now I'm able to open the file normally.
Still don't know exactly what went wrong...
