arrang an array

I have a set of filenames randomly in an array that i want to sort. How do I go about sorting them? The filenames are in terms of dates 020310 (march 10, 2002). The file extensions are asc, as1, as2, as3,etc. I would like to sort the array first by date then by extension as listed above.

I can help you if you show me how you are reading in your filenames. Do you already have an array?
