formula to find a specific value and return it in another ce

i am using excel.in colum D there is values
from 1-1000(d2-d1001),in row A there is names
of people.(A3-A30).how do i return a value in for example mr.smith(column)and 500.ie.go down to 500 and go across to mr.smith(colum G) and find value.i hope this makes sense.

The layout is confusing:

Where do you have the names exactly -- which row? In which cell do you first name and which cell do you have the last name?

The numbers seem to be in D. And the first number in D2 and last number in D1001. Right?
