Big problem. Backup software did not backup long filename in Windows 95. Backup software truncated to 8 positions and I need to know if a VB program or another method can be used to retrieve the original filename from the file.

Hi neavt

If it's "Backup software" surely it created a copy and not saved over the top of the original???

Anyway have a look in your temp folder, or old emails (as attachment).

Or, you could open them and try to see if Excel recognizes them !

Actually, the hard disk took a crash and it's since been replaced. I no longer have the original file, only the backup copy which is 8 characters. My IT dept is not any help, so I'm searching web sites to see if this can be done. I had several of these files and they were linked together. The last resort is to open each file and manually re-link them. Thanks for any help.

Hi neavt

Typical IT department! I find it hard to believe that a 'real IT person' could not get this for you.

Anyway, you can easily replace links in a Workbook with Edit>Links>Change Source.

hi neavt
long shot - if the spreadsheet was linked to other files, and if i have this right and you are just looking for the old filename, if you haven't updated links since you lost the file, could you open one of the linked files (ignoring the update links prompt) and look at edit>links to see if it shows the workbook's original name?
