When I try to launch Excel (and Word, Powerpoint, etc) it shows the starting box that says Excel 2000 and then closes. I have run virus scans with Norton. Have also run Spybot. Windows defender says nothing is wrong. I uninstalled Office 2000 and reloaded it. I restarted the system. Nothing seems to work. Why can't I get it to open? Someone, anyone, please help.
I'm running XP Pro, Office 2000. |

Yes it opened in safe mode. It shut down after I clicked through the user ID box.

What do you mean after you clicked through the USER ID box?

When I open in safe mode the used id box pops up asking for the "user". It is the same box you get when you initially install it and it asks your name, company, etc. You can bypass this when you install it.

There are several things that could be wrong...
Monitor issues: Believe it or not if you currently or have previously used a multi monitor display, office may be coming up on a monitor you cant see (yes this has happened to people before) Check your display settings and make sure your monitor settings are correct. Corrupted software: You may have corrupted software, upgrade to '07 (its way better) or get '03 for cheap on e-bay [to be on the safe side, you may try the disc on another computer] Improper set-up: Make sure the copy is registered and the appropriate key is used. Office is not always great about letting you know your [I]free trial/I] is up. If it is and the correct key is not in place, office won't open all the way. Re-install and neter correct product key. (As dumb as this sounds, this happened to me) Insufficient resources: Your computer might shut office down if it eats up too many resources. Check CPU and memory usage during the start up process. If it is, de-fragment your hard drive, and run the file compression. Also purge your tasks of unneccessary ones. There are more, I just can't think of them, post again if you need elaboration, of if there is more to the problem you want to share... nothing is impossible, this is fixable, I'll check back regularly, I've never not been able to fix software issues (with one exception, and I just bought new software because I didn't feel like fussing with it... everyone deserves to be lazy on occassion)

Responses to the last post...
Monitor issues: Not the issue as I've never used an external monitor with my laptop. Corrupted software: Maybe, but the disc was installed on another system without issue. I may look at '03 or '07. Improper set-up: See above. Didn't have an issue with the other system. Insufficient resources: The CPU usage jumps up when I open the program (try to open) but it doesn jump past 50% or so. I hear the "chord" sound but don't see a message. In safe mode the office assistant pops up, the sound occurs and it shuts down. |

I'm having the same issue, nothing has changed. I downloaded a startup program and got rid of some junk that was automatically starting. That solved the isse for a week or so but it is happening again.
