Sum only positive numbers in column

I have a spreadsheet set up to monitor my stock transactions and would like a formula to sum on the positive numbers in a column. I have tried the IF function in vain...can you please help...thanks.

Why not Sumif?

=SUMIF(A:A,">0") will sum all positive integers in column A

positive values, isn't it ? not just integers...
