Why is it not possible to 'Change Source'
within a file, to the file itself? ...AND
how can I edit the links to be self-referencing? (in 97 SR-1)

it is possible on xl 97, i'm pretty sure also for xl2000 but don't know about later versions. just click on the browse button in the edit links window and find the file name that way.

in Edit, Links, Change Source, when I try to
select the file from within, I get an error
message 'Cannot access ***.xls'.

hi laurajean
that was me who replied before - i posted as anonymous because i still was getting used to the new fangled board mr excel has invented.

from your original post it sounds like you need to unlink some files and fix up the external refs. microsoft's answer to this is here: http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q188449
hope this is what you're after
good luck

well, that's a neat wizard, however:
Wizard
INTERNAL LINK LOCATION
Defined Name Links: None Found
Hidden Name Links: None Found
Microsoft Query Links: None Found
Object Links: None Found

When I open CopyOf***.xls the external links
persist! what other types of links ARE
there? apparently there is a macro to search
out the links to manually deleter them (?)

Laura,

I have this problem too. Know what I resorted to ? I made a file on my desktop called links.xls with "delete me" written in cell A1, sheet 1. Then when you get a dubious link request on opening a spreadhseet, just edit those links to pointing at this desktop file cell A1. If they ever turn up properly they will say "delete me" in the cell, although if you don't want that just then move sheet 1 from "links.xls" into your current worksheet, effectively moving the external link back into the open spreadhseet. Crazy, eh ?

Ah, to be macro-proficient...
"just edit those links..."
Oh sure, I don't even know where the heck
those links are! I think I could edit them
if they would just show themselves instead of hiding like little cowards!

This is the type of thing I've been doing,
and will probably continue to do.
"move sheet 1 from "links.xls" into your current worksheet, effectively moving the external link back into the open spreadhseet. Crazy, eh ?"
you betcha!
Heeeere little external links, c'mere.
I don't want to hurt you...

thanks!

nice

if you goto "edit" then "links" you will get a table of any external links..... then pick the one that looks like being from Neptune and you can click on "change scource".. this is what I've been doing to my desktop "links.xls" file

OK, maybe I overstated my ignorance. I do
know about Edit/Links... You have got me
wondering if there is a way to hunt out the
culprit cells/chart series/etc. within my worksheet so that I can manually edit them. (?)

thanks, Chris!

yeah.... using that edit links facility, point them now to your desktop file you created, pointing to its cell A1 which contains "delete me"

then, if they are kosher, they'll turn up with "delete me" visible and you can delete them or edit them

if after time they don't, just move the sheet 1 from your desktop file into your current file to make the link internal rather than external, saving your current file but not saving changes to your desktop file

eventually, all those link prompts will disappear, and you will see "delete me" peppered throughout your spreadsheets with which you can edit them back to planet earth
