Need to count specific numbers in a string of letters and symbols.

Here is my current formula.

{=SUM(IF(R10:R870="212",1,0))}


Numbers to be included are (212, 210, 209) cannot be in combination with any other numbers except themselves.

Here are 3 examples (each example is one cell and only needs to be counted once):

1) 212:ekitalleiwlwlw212:dslkfkfd;alwe,208:
2) cm:dchwidjhf212:elwfkjaw,210:
3) 209:lfwekja;papape,443:sldkfjqowi

Try this formula to count cells in the range that contain at least one of the values

=SUMPRODUCT((LEN(R10:R870)>LEN(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(R10:R870,"212",""),"210",""),"209","")))+0)

Your reply could count 212, but needed it to be able to count 212 as well the other numbers 209 and 210.
Is there a way to make that formula count the 210 and 209's?

Your reply could count each one of the requested numbers, but I need it to not count those numbers if they have any other three digit number.


Acceptable numbers are 209, 210, 213. Not acceptable are 000 thru 999.

For example:
1) 209:fejoaiajeajefl,210:falkejea;weiajsdkjfeia this should count 1 (which both of you)

2) 209:alskdjfa;owieja,443:dfj;aowiejaslej,213:ejf;aowiej this should not count anything because of the 443

3) 220:sdkajf;elsijalars,213:dkfja;lseiajsl,509:al;skdjalseise this again should not count anything because of 220 and 509

4) 209:df;alseijalseij,210:d;alseijalseij,213:ldkjfjlsiejlfsej this one as well should count only as one.

I'd love to see if it's possible to do it both ways if possible with add'l formula or another way if easier.

Remark1:

I assumed that the only numbers in the text are the 3 digit numbers, like in the examples you posted.

Remark2:

Barry and Jim can also add this new condition to their formulas, but I think you'll always end up with a big formula.

I think you'd be better off if you'd write some vba code to do the counting.

If you were looking at VBA then you could use the Duplicate Master addin instead, http://www.experts-exchange.com/A_2123.html for its flexibility.

The RegExp may look a handful - and it is - but editing VBA to perform the same job would also be fiddly

I've updated the Duplicate Master options to cater for this functionality, I have added a screenshot of the settings for this problem at the download link

A regular expression pattern of
(^|[^\d])2(09|10|12|13)([^\d]|$)|[^\d]
will match any character that is non-numeric, but it will allow 209, 210, 212 and 213 (NB but not these strings contained in longer numeric strings ie 9213)

** Note this pattern assumed that any string without an invalid numeric string should be matched **

Then 1) using "||Bob-Neil||" as a replacement string for a valid match(on the basis that this will not match an existing string), then
2) replacing all '||Bob-Neil||' strings with a single '||Bob-Neil||'

That worked perfectly, but when I tried to this same formula on the worksheet, I got a value of 0. Would that have to do with blank cells?

Looks like the original data was the problem. Now when I use a different worksheet with the original data, your formula works. I've tried adding more numbers and I was able to add one more number, but after adding a second one on my own or a 5th number i get an error, is there a limit to the amt of numbers or values you can add? I'm just not sure if it's human error or not. I'm leaning towards me.

I didn't have any problem in adding more numbers (besides the formula getting bigger and uglier).

You can have problems if you have a version prior to excel 2007 because of there was a limit on the number of parentheses that you could use. In excel 2007 or 2010 it should work.

Could that be the problem?
