Requirement.

How to compare two excel worksheets. Please help.

In Details

One of my worksheet was updated by two of my friends individually by saving the workbook.

Now i would like to know what is the different from both the sheets. how can i do this.

Thanks.

Excel Facts

Control Word Wrap
Press Alt+Enter to move to a new row in a cell. Lets you control where the words wrap.
Hi,

Are they large complex sheets with merged (yuch) cells or simple ones??

If they are simple ones a formula can compare, large complex will be a VBA solution - can you post any of the data??

Cheers,
Ian,.

This may get you started. Change the sheet names to fit your workbook. Here Sheet1 is your original sheet (before any changes by your friends) and Sheet2 is the one that may have been changed. Cells that have been changed will appear with a red fill.
Code:
Sub CompareSheets()
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
'Compares 2 worksheets in same workbook to see if Sheet2 differs from Sheet1
'If sheet2 has a different usedrange than sheet1, the user has the option
'of exiting the sub or comparing only the usedrange of sheet1 to the same range in sheet2
'Could easily be expanded in latter case to compare usedrange of sht2 to same range in sht1
'Any differences found in sht2 are given a red cell fill.
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
Dim sht1 As Worksheet, sht2 As Worksheet
Dim rng1 As Range, rng2 As Range
Dim Adr1 As String, Adr2 As String
Dim Answer As Integer, msg As String
Dim DiffList As String

Set sht1 = ThisWorkbook.Sheets("Sheet1") 'Change sheet name to suit your needs
Set sht2 = ThisWorkbook.Sheets("Sheet2") 'Change sheet name to suit your needs
Set rng1 = sht1.UsedRange
Set rng2 = sht2.UsedRange
Adr1 = rng1.Address
Adr2 = rng2.Address

'Check that used ranges are identical
If Adr1 <> Adr2 Then
    msg = sht2.Name & " covers range " & Adr2 & " while " & sht1.Name & " covers range " & Adr1
    msg = msg & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & "Do you want to check for differences in cells within the usedrange of " & sht1.Name
    Answer = MsgBox(msg, vbYesNo)
    If Answer = vbNo Then Exit Sub
End If
'Check individual cells
DiffList = ""
For Each cel In rng1
    Adr1 = cel.Address
    If cel.Value <> sht2.Range(Adr1).Value Then
    sht2.Range(Adr1).Interior.ColorIndex = 3
    DiffList = DiffList & ", " & Adr1
    End If
Next cel
If DiffList = "" Then
    MsgBox "No differences found!"
Else
msg = "The following cells in " & sht2.Name & " differ from the cells with the same address in " & sht1.Name
MsgBox msg & vbNewLine & Right(DiffList, Len(DiffList) - 1)
End If
End Sub

Joemoe,

Very nice, I have a similar one using formulas and CF, yours is better:)

The code I posted earlier was just a quick check of values. Below is a better version that should be more extensive in checking error values, blank cells, formulas, and constants to see if there are changes to Sheet2 from the original Sheet1 entries. I did not extend this to check for changes in cell comments, but that can be easily done.
Code:
Sub CompareSheets2()
'Any differences found in sht2 are given a cell fill with a color specific to the cell
'contents (i.e., error value, formula, constant).
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

After posting my revised code I discovered a glitch when working with sheets that have merged cells. The glitch arises because when using the Range.SpecialCells(xlCellTypeBlanks) method, Excel inexplicably includes all merged cells in the Range even when they contain data. So, I did another more extensive revision that now includes checking for differences in blank cells, merged cells, formula cells, constant cells and cells with comments. To deal with the glitch I found it necessary to unmerge all merged cells in both sheets, make all comparisons and then restore the merged cells on both sheets. If anyone sees an easier way to do this, I'd appreciate a reply. Likewise, if you use this code and have any feedback, I'd appreciate that too.
Code:
Sub CompareSheets2()
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
'Written by JoeMo 10/25/2010
'Compares 2 worksheets in same workbook to see if Sheet2 differs from Sheet1
'If sheet2 has a different usedrange than sheet1, the user has the option
'of exiting the sub or comparing only the usedrange of sheet1 to the same range in sheet2.
'If there are merged cells in either sheet, the cells are unmerged to make a comparison.
'This is necessary because in using Range.SpecialCells(xlCellTypeBlanks)on
'cells in Sheet1, VBA will include all merged cells in Range, even if they are not empty.
'After all comparisons are made, the cells that were unmerged are merged again
'to restore the original state of merged cells on both sheets.
'Any differences found in sht2 are given a cell fill with a color specific to the cell
'contents (i.e., error value, formula, constant, cell comment, ...).
'IF CELL COMMENTS ARE EDITED IN SHEET2 (i.e. changed from sheet1), THEY WILL BE
'DETECTED. HOWEVER, IF NEW COMMENTS ARE ADDED TO SHEET2, THE CELLS CONTAINING THEM
'WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED (not worth the effort since added comments do not change
'the functionality of the sheet)EXCEPT TO SIGNAL IF THE TOTAL CELL COMMENT
'COUNT ON SHEET2 DIFFERS FROM THE TOTAL CELL COMMENT COUNT ON SHEET1.
