hi

in cell B2 i have this written

YV>100

in B3 I want to write

=IF(B2,NUM,"")

which should be equal to

=IF(YV>100,NUM,"")

but it's not.

Gosh, I have a feeling someone is going to show me up on this one, any help appreciated thanks.

try this enter yv in b2 and in b3 put

=IF(CELL("contents",b2)>100,"NUM","")

It is not clear what you are trying to accomplish ... if you are trying to say that if there is a number in cell B2, then put the entry "NUM" in cell B3 otherwise leave cell B3 blank, then put in cell B3

=IF(ISNUMBER(B2),"NUM","")

Please post back if it works for you ... otherwise explain a little further and let us take it from there!

like cornbread i'm not quite sure what you want, but if B2 has literally what you wrote in your post the formula won't work because it's referring to text. for text you could use =IF(ISTEXT(B2),"NUM",""), which just tests whether there is text in the cell. if YV>100 is supposed to be a logical test should it be =YV>100, where YV is a named range or some other kind of reference? then it should work.

Are "YV" and "NUM" defined names?
