simple question - counting text

This should be an easy one (newbie here).

I have a column that has people's initials. I want to count how many times each person's intials appear in the column and then list the totals.

This should be easy, right?

3 ways come to mind. Simplest would be the COUNTIF function. Or you could sort by the initials, and use Subtotals. Or use a pivot table.
