Test for protection

How can I test a workbook and worksheet to see if it is protected. In the help it only talks about showing protectionmode to a msgbox. I am trying to make a workbook/worksheet compatible with 97,2000 and 2002. I am getting an error in my routine in 97 when I try to unprotect a sheet I crash my routine. I am calling it from an active-x command could that be my problem?
