I have a Large Excel file that I work on constantly - When I open this file it automatically opens 2 of the same file (ex. Telephone.xls & Telephone1.xls) it looks like it is automatically creating a backup of the file. I need to know how to delete the second file (because it doesn't show when I browse for it - only when the original file is open it comes up in a different window). It takes forever to save the file because of this and it is happening on my 2 biggest excel files!! Help!!! How do I delete it? And how do I stop it from happening??
Please Help!! |

You don't have a duplicate file. What you have is two windows open with the same file in both windows.
When the file opens, close one of the windows without saving the file. Now Save and close the remaining window. The next time you open the file, you should have only one version of it. Good luck |

How did this happen to the file?

My guess is that at some point a second window was opened and the file was saved with the window open.

Hmmmmm.....
Do you possibly have an auto_open macro that runs when you open the file? If you disable macros when the file is opened, do you still get extra copies? |

It doesn't ask me to disable macro - but I notice when I open this file called AA.xls it opens AA.xls:1 & AA.xls:3. I cannot figure out why and if I try to save file as something else - it does the same thing. saves file name with ( :1 & :3) at end of file name

Curiouser and curiouser....
Do you have any modules that might be opening the second window? If you want, you could send a copy of the file to me in an email. k |

I have the same problem *.xls:1, *.xls:2 etc. When you close xls:2 or 1 they both disappear so there is no opportunity to save the remaining xls:1
And if you rename the file you get xls:1 and xls:2 As usual MSFT help is of no help! |
