Are there any worthwhile quals you can get in excel & VBA that will make you into a credible user for employers to take you on?

I'm interested in this question as well.
Am a truck driver who programs a bit on the side for the same employer. The local market seems to demand a BA before any certifications are worth their weight in salt.

Yes, trouble is that many people will put Excel VBA on their CV's, over here some employers don't really trust you when you say that you taught yourself they like to see something on paper. I guess this is fair enough since I'd like to explain to potential employers that I know more than just how to record the odd macro so need something concrete. Can you get microsoft quals?

I would suggest you look at the Microsoft certifciations. You can learn the material through self study books, web sites and courses.. then book an exam for aprox $150 usd.
The two certifications you would probably be interested in is MCSD (Solution Developer) and MCAD (App. Developer) ... or mayber even MOUS (office user specilist).

Hey, a question at my level! (Gives me a chance to payback some of the great stuff on this site!)
I am a MOUS Master Instructor. MOUS just explores the application use in the average office--does NOT cover anything about VBA. And the only questions about macros are how to record them and how to run them. If you want to prove you can use the app, the expert Excel MOUS is the one. There are only a half mil MOUS certifications worldwide, and it is a growing cert. But if you are experienced at VBA and development, go for the others Nimrod listed. And good luck.

I'm studying for my MCSD right now.
I am wondering how much it is really going to help me though.
But for you RET79.
Check out the site.
Your take three core exams, and one elective to get your cert.
Choices are, I think, VC++ or VB.
The third test is an indoctrination and brain washing for the Microsoft Solution Framework.
Hell, if you can manage to learn all of the acronyms, the coding is a breeze.

I know at least 8 people that are working in "the industry" without having university degrees. They studied the materials i.e., MS Dev, MCSE, Progress 4GL . These guys were mill workers, blackjack casino dealers etc before doing the exams. They got a couple of lucky breaks , a couple years experience and are now doing very well. Two of them are contractors at $150/hr others work for companies in IT security, NetOps and programming.
In short YES the works out there.

OK what route would you advise to someone like me who has a decent grasp of excel and some VBA experience... I'm not sure the link you gave before was the one you intended??

all MS certs are seen as a standra that the world knows, much is good much is also text book rubbish and they are VERY hard work and cost a mint, all mine are old back to the years dot, but at present me and a guy are hitting Win2000 MCSE and Javascripts, so we will study again for at least a year and hit the paid cource, i would NEVER suggest just paying it a waste, i go on all day about the grumbles i learn the hard ways and over many long lonley nights reading and playing... and i have got no where, bar MASSIVE respect by my IT dept.. soon iexpect ill join them.

I have worked in many companies and receive much emails from IT directors amd managers many have failed the Win2000 MCSE its in many sections and very complex, now out of date, as XP is the new kid on the block, so if you go MCSE you have to stay up to date.. nearly all teh guys i know are like me out of dayte or have parts the the totals scattered all over the place.

WEB is where the money is... VB is big but now .net version.. not so the same really... VBA is snarled at untill guys struggle with Excel...


All my software development and design and techi IT staff all listen to me and YES i he;[ the a lot and support best i can....
