How do I get rid of this problem? I can't format my cells...it keeps giving me this message. How can I either get around this problem or delete existing "formats" that aren't needed?

Scroll to the bottom of the Custom Number Format list and start deleting formats that you don't need.

Well, it's not just custom number formats. I've done this before. Excel isn't letting me format cells in other ways (fill-in, justifying, lines, etc.)

Do you have lots of Charts in the workbook? These things are notorious for overusing fonts.

Hmmm...interesting. This only happens with really large spreadsheets...where I have a bunch of formats, etc. I just wish Excel didn't have a limit on formats.

Even in a large spreadsheet you may have cells formatted in columns and rows that span beyond your useful data range. So you may want to delete all columns past your useful data range, and then similarly delete all rows past your useful data range, then save the workbook, reopen and gage the difference. HTH
