I have a CD of Office 97 and am wondering if it is compatable with Windows XP. I've heard it's not, but that I could load it to XP, then buy
If you only want Excel and Word, not Power Point and Outlook too, can this be done? I've installed a Program called Software602 Pro PC Suite that's supposed to be like Office, but have noticed in Tab, which is they're Excel clone, I can't make cells sequentially numbered in a column, like you can in Excel. Does anyone have this Program and have you been able to do this? Thanks, kinda busy question for my first Post here. |

If you do not require Access which you say you do not, i cant see why XP will not allow Excel 97 to load and run, but XP was delivered with Office 2000 and of cause XP itself.
E97 or better Office97 will load into any directory you custom install into, 2000 and XP will not, the trick is in this case to change the default load install directory to say Office97_JACK this will highlight it the program file structure tree and allow you to tweak if needs be If you have no Office then cant see the problem, provided you have FULL licensed copy of DSP software Office with CD key, can not see any issues attached. As you are going up, not down, XP can run lumpy on 97, very few bits fail from E97 in XP, outlook VBA springs to mind as does file protections, but that the high end usage. Office 97 is so small, and harmless. CAUTION Office 2000 full will rip out Office 97 NO CHOICE is will do this and so will XP, the trick is as above but load higher first and then office 97, pointless if you run 2000 or XP but that’s the reality fix. Not picking or say you have I point out, = but for any readers if you have pirate copy’s this above could well fail,, and I suggest only correct legal copy’s please… Trust me pirate can will and does cause problems. I should know I fix enough PC’s.

Jack, the CD I have is licensed with a registration number. You are saying XP should accept Office 97 and run ok?

yup i cant see any issues and see that it should be ok, not ideal as explained as Microsoft never released these as partners as such.
if the install aborts your know in seconds as windows will check its self, along when it checks Hard Drive space availability and so on, saying what ever message. SUGGETS the default dir it will load to you can change in higher version you can not, Microsoft being naughty so guys cant multi office runs... try it, i run Win2000 at this moment with XP Office and E97 will load my end... so XP should allow this....

Ok, I'll give it a go. Like you say, XP will let you know if it doesn't take.
