When I entered data in a cell, the data that I typed appeared twice in the worksheet but only once in the formula bar. I am adding a name; last, first to an existing list of names in the same column. The other names appear as they were typed. I checked formatting but can't find what would cause this to happen. If I insert a leading apostrophe after spacig four times, the data appears as typed.

There is no formatting in the cell or the formula bar at the top. The cell only contains letters, i.e last name, first name.

When you choose the Format | Cells... menu command and click on the Custom category what do you see in the Type field?
