Whenever I open any Excel file (.xls), Excel-2000 (running on Win95 & using Norton-AV2000) shows "requesing virus scan..." in the status bar. It does this for each file, plug-in (.xla) that it loads.

It often takes 60-90 seconds to get through all this although I'm just trying to open a simple file that I've created.

Is there a way to get Excel to stop requesting a virus scan on my everyday files?

(I've put *.xls and *.xla in the Norton Exclusions option and I've reduced Excel's Macro Security to the lowest level.)

Thanks,
Phil

****** NO ONE IS TO FOLLOW MY COMMENTS HERE THIS IS ONLY FOR THIS POSTER I DO NOT Recommend THIS ****** EVER//// ----

Whenever I open any Excel file (.xls), Excel-2000 (running on Win95 & using Norton-AV2000) shows "requesting virus scan..." in the status bar. It does this for each file, plug-in (.xla) that it loads.

OK remove the xla ) un tick the add in normal way
now re boot
open the file it will fail or open less the add in bits
OK run the file all OK . did Norton kick in

this test the file and the xla, to prove the thought it really is the add in causing the agros. (not always the case)

assuming this is the case now DEEP Scan the xla ONLY, (i trust you have definitions dated 8th May are latest or where before my leave, if not load them and scan - scan old checkers is worthless,

IF all clear scan the whole HDD deep search, include all zip files and systems file s EVERYTHING,

It often takes 60-90 seconds to get through all this although I'm just trying to open a simple file that I've created.

Thisis just one file! possible how big is this file and how big is the xla

Is there a way to get Excel to stop requesting a virus scan on my everyday files?

Excel is not scanning don’t be mislead NORTON is the scanner software not excel

(I've put *.xls and *.xla in the Norton Exclusions option and I've reduced Excel's Macro Security to the lowest level.)

Clearly NORTION is unhappy with something, i dislike NORTON Virus products as they can be flaky, and also they are prone to virus attacks, i have tested this many times, nice safe system yep but infected virus checker??? not so go me thinks.

Check in quarantined directory in case NORTON has sent a doc there, and read the log see what’s it found.

let me know the outcome...

The answer is simple.

regsvr32 /u "c:program filesnorton systemworksnorton
antivirusofficeav.dll"

Obviously the location of officeav.dll can differ.

xl

i find your reference to me being an idiot a touch offensive, and I take you sincere apologize as ment and take these in advanced and thank you for this.

I notice you have made some 5 posts, and welcome you to this board as all the regulars do to, I would ask you to check my credentials, over 1000 posts and my title is MCSE I know you know what that is, you have very cleverly found a solution which I know will work and is excellent.

But can I ask now I have made sure I hope the system is fine and working without hassles, as you have given this solution and you have offered not any line of what the poster should do to make this work for him can I request you finish off and advise what the poster should do.

I opt not to use the net to find such solutions, as I would rather find if techi issue arise that the PC is stable and one piece fails to work. 15 years in the PC world this is correct, any MCSE and guru techi know AVTK a MUST and just scan it and work on.

My end was let me know, so your see im not finished.

Thank you again for you detail to this poster.

Polite manners cost nothing and insults are pretty childish, you agree.

Notice the respect I show towards you….

Wow, a person with a MCSE! Truely amazing. I'm glad that you have a piece of paper that says you know how to point and click in Windows and you know the TCP/IP stack in Windows. Still, that has NOTHING to do with leaning on your own understanding and NOT being lazy. GG.

XL,

In spite of your harsh words, I thank you.

Probably foolishly, I took a leap of faith and ran the command that you gave (after tracking down the proper folder) and it worked!
Can you give me a link or short explanation of what I did? Is this a known bug in the dll?

Thanks for your help. Honest, I wasn't lazy, just ignorant.

Here is one helpful explanation for those who are interested.

Xl

You're a real pain in the ***. Do you spend all the computer time mommy and daddy allow you every day posting obnoxious, insulting replies to everyone's queries?

Stop slathering this message board with childish attempts to display your technical intelligence and start working on some social and emotional intelligence instead.
