file format is not valid, Excel 97 sp2

Situation:

User A creates an Excel spreadsheet (a simple table) and saves it to a network drive. User B makes changes to the spreadsheet using the EXACT SAME version of Excel that user A used to create it and saves her changes. Now, when user A tries to open the document, she gets ": file format is not valid". I got the same error when attempting to open the spreadsheet. I changed the extension to .doc for lack of other ideas and it opened up in a table in Word. I can't do that with a normal, undamaged xls file. What caused the error in the first place and why can I open it in Word after changing the extension? Thanks!

The file server where they're saving the file? Novell.
